CLASSICAL PAINTING TECHNIQUES

Klaas Hendrik Hart

This program is designed for those who have tried painting, but would like to have a better understanding of classical approaches. Learn time-honoured techniques that have been passed down from the Renaissance to the Impressionist period. Students will learn the methods of building a painting by reproducing works of traditional painters such as Velazquez, Vermeer, Sargent and Pissarro. Effective techniques of transferring the drawing, underpainting/overpainting, dead colouring, scumbling, glazing and painting alla prima will all become familiar in the course of study. Students are encouraged to work on projects in either oils or acrylics.

COMPOSITION FOR PAINTERS

Jennifer Hinrichs

Good composition is the primary key to creating paintings that work. Without an understanding of the elements of design, even the most accomplished technique can fail to produce the desired results. Whether you are a beginner, or more experienced painter, whether you paint freely and expressively or with classical precision, this course will give you the tools to create more compelling and powerful work. Through stimulating exercises and longer studies, using still-life, landscape and the figure as inspiration, students will be encouraged to think about and apply composition in a new way. Positive forms, negative shapes, strong patterns of lights and darks will be taken into consideration when making initial painting decisions. Only when all these elements are working can paint colour and surface succeed.

At the turn of the century, the Impressionist painters had more colours than ever before at their disposal. Students will explore the range of paint now offered to us and learn how to best approach this often dizzying array of choices. The medium of choice is oil, however, those wishing to paint with acrylic will be accommodated.
