Lydia
Panart
This course is designed for beginners who are interested in developing
their drawing and painting skills in landscape studies. Organized
into three terms, attendance in all three sessions is recommended
for students who wish to gain the full benefit of the program. Students
who wish to attend only the winter or spring term should have some
acrylic painting experience.
Monday 9:00 am-12:00 pm
TERM I - Fall: $455.00
Working from a photo reference of an urban scene, students will
be introduced to drawing fundamentals including composition, perspective,
fore-/mid-/background and landmark representation. The same scene
will then be developed using the painting techniques of colour theory/mixing
and paint handling/application to achieve transitions, contrast
and sense of depth. Students will have the opportunity to bring
complementary landscape images to practice and refine their drawing
and painting skills.

MASTER CLASS IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING
John
Viljoen
The goal of this course is the construction of a large studio landscape.
The landscape painters of the seventeenth century up through the
Group of Seven period made their paintings in this manner. Students
will learn to synthesize their drawings, photographic references,
and pleine air paintings with ideas of light, air, perspective and
knowledge of the landscape to give a complete picture of the surroundings.
This combination of the empirical with the rational is fundamental
to all classical art. Artistic principles of theme, composition
and perspective will unify these works. It is through this extensive
and real engagement that the artist learns to capture the spirit
of the landscape. Inspired beginners are welcome!

PAINTING & DRAWING THE ACTIVE FIGURE
Jennifer
Hinrichs
While painting from the clothed model set in interior settings,
this program will teach painters how to capture the figure in action
and repose. Using gesture and tonal value sketches to quickly record
the essential movements of the model, along with longer studies,
the class will expand its knowledge of composition and colour by
considering the unity of figure and background, while learning to
treat all the visual elements as equally important. Students will
explore line, form, light and shade, warm and cool colours to create
mood, temperature, drama and harmony. Examples of work by well known
painters such as Degas and Vermeer are studied to see how these
artists understood the powerful connection between model and environment.
