This mini-studio course is designed for students who have taken
previous drawing courses and have a good understanding of various
drawing techniques. Students will employ direct observation as
they refine their ability to incorporate fine details into still-life
and portrait drawing. Using traditional subject matter to explore
a range of drawing materials and techniques including colour and
gesture, participants will improve their compositional and rendering
skills. The goals of this workshop are to identify and correct
problems in drawing, while exploring one's
own creative interpretation.

Intro to Portrait Drawing

This mini-course is a rare opportunity for beginners, serious students
and emerging artists to study portrait drawing.Working on a single,
long pose drawing for the duration of the course, students will be introduced
to a contemporary – classical vocabulary, and will examine the
visual and natural design concepts that define portraiture, likeness and
character. It will push students toward a greater awareness of their own
visual actions, and a refinement of their conceptual understanding, technique
and sense of form. Teaching will consist of lecture/demonstrations on the
complex actions of light, the organic design and features of the head,
neck, and shoulders, group demonstrations, and one-on-one critique at the
easel. A proven, logical and sequential approach, the only pre-requisites
are an open mind and a willingness to be pushed to a higher level.

Designed for the novice painter or those who would like a refresher in
the basics of painting varying subject matter, this program introduces
students to an exciting range of techniques and approaches to painting.
The elements of design will be addressed, including basic colour theory.
Plenty of individual attention will be provided as you study painting using
still-life, landscape through photographic images and abstraction.

Painting the Contemporary Landscape

Best suited for those with previous painting experience, realism,
metaphor and abstraction will be explored as students create a
contemporary landscape painting. Students will work indoors and
will develop ideas using source material such as sketches, photos,
props, and memory. Students will work in the colour medium/media
with which he/she has prior experience, including oil, acrylic,
pastel, and watercolour. Collage and experimental use of media
will be encouraged.

Intro to Landscape Painting

Beginners or more advanced painters, will find out how to make dynamic
compositions from photo-references and learn how to use brushstrokes to
create various effects such as blending, layering, colour transitions and
varying foliage densities. Hands-on practice on how to express the qualities
of reflection, transparency, movement and depth will round out this program.
Acrylic paint is the medium.

This mini-studio program provides intermediate and advanced students with
a unique opportunity to explore an area of personal interest, using drawing
or painting, under the guidance of an experienced artist/instructor. Plenty
of individual attention will be provided and individual and group critiques
will be part of the workshop. Students will be encouraged to refine not
only their skills in drawing & painting, but also further develop artistic
visions and approaches to creating their artwork.
