Anatomy and Figure Drawing
Thomas Hendry
This course is principally intended for those with some prior figure drawing experience, who wish to deepen their understanding of how underlying structures relate to the surface of the human body. The course combines information on anatomy with the practice of figure drawing. More than just learning a set of isolated forms, by the end of the course students should better understand how the parts of a body function as a harmonious whole - a dynamic interplay of flesh & bone. Beginning with the skeleton, students will review the major bones and their articulations. This will be followed by presentations of the major muscle groups in different areas of the body. Lectures, demonstrations and handouts will be supplemented by a substantial amount of time spent drawing studies from life models of the limbs and structures discussed. Some attention will also be given to heads, hands & feet- in particular the bony forms that underlie them. The last part of the course will be devoted to drawings of the whole figure, integrating the material examined.
This class is not being offered for Spring 2013.

Life Drawing Basics
Thomas Hendry
For many, the process of representing a human body is a challenge. This course will guide the participants through a 'contemporary/classic' approach to drawing the human figure, touching on the foundations of the drawing process: gestural study, measurement and proportion, contour and mass drawing, light and shadow and a look at some relevant anatomical structures.
The focus in this class will mostly be the nude model, however the exercises & processes used can also apply with equal relevance to most other observational drawing situations. Beginners will learn some basic approaches which can be applied to any further drawing and more experienced students will have the opportunity to hone their drawing skills.
