Painting with Light

with Sarah Jane Gorlitz

'Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.' (Anton Chekhov).
From Vermeer to Monet to Gerhart Richter, many great artists have been fascinated by the depiction of light in all its ever-changing variations. Many would argue that the medium of painting has a unique potential to express the intangibility of light, in a tangible, malleable and evocative form. Taking inspiration from various art historical references, we will consider the nuances of light achievable through different techniques, in the mediums of acrylic and oil. Students will learn various techniques and approaches, and be encouraged to develop their 'eye' - their ability to translate subtle aspects of the visible into paint. Appropriate for those with some painting experience, students will hone their technical skills and push their perceptual awareness. Through a mix of experimentation and focused independent projects, this course encourages the development of a personal, artistic voice. Material list provided.
