Clay Creations (formerly Pottery) (JK-Gr. 8)

Jennifer ChinDiane Hamilton

Come and enjoy the accessible and highly tactile medium of clay! In this hands-on studio program, young artists will develop and refine a variety of hand-building techniques: pinching, coiling, slab construction and modeling. Students will learn surface decoration techniques as well, working with underglazes, low-fire glazes and high-fire glazes. Past projects have included wishing wells, dinosaurs, pirate islands, imaginative houses, Viking ships, self-portrait busts, platters, pierced vases, pond bowls, and hot cocoa mugs. While the focus is on hand-building techniques, students also get to try throwing on a potter’s wheel.

Clay Archeologists (Gr. 2-7)

Diane HamiltonAudrey Mah

Join in an exploration of historic cultures using the magnificent and ancient medium of clay. Young artists will re-create artifacts from ancient civilizations, and learn about the fascinating cultures that produced those artifacts. Students will put together clues about the values, lifestyle and art of ancient peoples, based on archeological evidence. Students will travel through time and across the globe, making connections with earlier cultures through the touch of hand on clay. We will use the age-old techniques of hand-building, as well as the potter's wheel.
