Using a variety of artist's tools and materials, including pencil, pen, ink, paint and more, students will design funny faces, outrageous bodies and the many dynamic actions and unique stories that go along with these new characters. Young artists will develop their artistic skills while having fun discovering their own personal style. Working from still life, photographs, images from art history and/or independent themes and ideas, students will be introduced to specific drawing and painting fundamentals and techniques. These include line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour perspective and collage. While experimenting with an exciting variety of artist’s tools, media and techniques, students will learn to explore and trust their creative instincts.

Drawing & Painting from the Masters (Gr. 3-6)

Students will learn the principles of drawing and painting, while discovering techniques employed by artists of the past and present. Using images from art history and many of the artist's tools and materials, students will reproduce and reinterpret art, while being introduced to specific fundamentals and techniques, including line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour, perspective and collage. This hands-on studio class is designed to give young artists an appreciation and understanding of art history in a fun and creative way.

In this studio course, students will build upon their traditional drawing and painting skills and will be introduced to a variety of experimental techniques popularized by artists in the 20th century like collage, photo transfer, colour field and abstract painting. Through the exploration of a wide variety of techniques and materials covered in this course, students will be on the road to honouring their art-making skills while discovering their unique, artistic style.

Portrait & Figure Painting (Gr. 4-8)

Working from a live model is among one of the best ways to improve your painting skills. While painting from a clothed model, students will discover individual expression and learn the techniques needed for creating portrait and figure paintings. Students will explore how shape, dimension, measuring properties, shading/highlighting and colour mixing apply to the human form. Using simple palettes, students will create several images as they learn to use light, shadow and colour to create a strong sense of form.

This studio course is intended for young artists interested in developing a body of artwork and a portfolio, in anticipation of further art studies at the secondary level. Students will build upon their repertoire of art-making techniques through a series of hands-on projects. Techniques covered in this course include drawing and painting from still life, the clothed model, photographs, as well as learning sketchbook and concept development techniques. Students will complete a number of art pieces, unique to each term.

Youth Studio: Creating a Portfolio (Gr. 8-12)

This advanced studio course is intended for young artists interested in building a cohesive portfolio of work while developing their repertoire of art-making techniques. Through a series of hands-on projects, students will gain experience and technical proficiency in a wide variety of media. Techniques covered in this course include drawing and painting from observation, sculptural modeling and sketchbook and concept development. Studio work will be supplemented with discussions and critiques to allow students to develop a language through which they can exercise observation, research and critical thinking skills. For college, university and art school applicants, portfolios will be reviewed and prepared with the guidance of the instructor. Interview and presentation techniques will also be discussed.
