Understanding the principles and elements of colour and design is essential for any aspiring artist. Learning these building blocks will ensure the success of an art creation and provide young artists with the confidence to experiment and allow self-expression to shine through. While exploring with drawing, acrylic painting, printmaking and collage, students will design and develop amazing art pieces, which include theatre and film posters, set and costume design concepts and many unique works of art. Students will use the fundamental elements of colour and design and develop their understanding of what makes art interesting to create and to look at.

Cartooning (Gr. 1-5)

Draw your very own cartoon characters, creatures, animals and magical beasts. Using a variety of artist's tools and materials, including pencil, pen, ink, paint and more, students will design funny faces, outrageous bodies and the many dynamic actions and unique stories that go along with these new characters. Enjoy a different project each term!

Cartooning & Illustration (Gr. 5-10)

Are you interested in comics, cartoons, graphic novels or do you just like to draw? Students of any ability will learn to develop their narrative and graphic abilities through the use of dip pens, brush and ink, acrylic paint, scratchboard and more! Projects can include; trading cards, class comic anthologies, animation flipbooks and dozens of other activities developed through the surprisingly complex language of cartooning.

Comic Book Studies (Gr. 2-8)

This program offers students a chance to draw comic books in a variety of different styles, including Japanese manga, traditional super hero, and underground experimental. The class will learn to adapt stories into graphic narratives and complete a finished comic, drawing inspiration from comic books and other forms of art like music, movies, and videogames. Focus will be on colour theory, perspective, dynamic human figure drawing and composition, while students will have the opportunity to create works that represent their ideas using powerful composition, dramatic lighting and expressive design. Heroes, villains, scary monsters, and space aliens that want to take over the world will come to life in this hands-on program.

Young artists will develop their artistic skills while having fun discovering their own personal style. Working from still life, photographs, images from art history and/or independent themes and ideas, students will be introduced to specific drawing and painting fundamentals and techniques. These include line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour perspective and collage. While experimenting with an exciting variety of artist's tools, media and techniques, students will learn to explore and trust their creative instincts.

Drawing & Painting Modern Art (Gr. 7-10)

In this fun and contemporary approach to painting, young artists will experiment with traditional drawing and painting techniques while being introduced to new ways of looking at and approaching subject matter. Fresh ideas and the latest methods, materials and the ways in which they can be incorporated into painting will be explored. Students will be encouraged to explore, use experimentation and be spontaneous in the development of their own painting ideas. Plenty of photo references of contemporary and modern art will be provided to show students how composition, balance, colour, form and symbolism make abstract and modern art paintings into powerful art pieces.

Landscape Painting (Gr. 5-8)

This course is for students who enjoy the beauty and excitement of nature. Using a variety of materials, including an assortment of paint, pens, pastels and papers, participants will paint from still life and photographs to create their own unique landscape paintings. The class will use traditional drawing and painting techniques and get a chance to try out new techniques including layering with paint, working with colour washes and glazes and using mixed media materials in their painting as they learn about composition, colour, perspective and texture.
