Adventures with Art

From the Egyptians to Renoir to Picasso to Andy Warhol, students will create two-and three-dimensional art pieces, exploring colour, pattern and texture, based on some of the most famous artists and art pieces of past and present. This mixed media based class will allow children to explore and learn about many art materials and techniques and is designed to give young artists an appreciation and understanding of art history in a fun and creative way. In a studio filled with exciting materials and tools, students will turn their ideas into works of art that will be their very own masterpieces!

Architecture & Design (Gr. 4-8)

Design any type of structure and space you want! This class will explore the fundamentals of architectural design, both in drawing and model form. Students will be able to handpick what they would like to design and some of the materials that they would like to use based on their interests and past experience in this course or other art-based classes. We will use 2- and 3- dimensional methods of representation drawings, scale models and collage in designing the student's own spaces and structures. Each student will begin with an abstract concept for their specific design and end the term with a clear representation of that idea in drawing and scale model.

Understanding the principles and elements of colour and design is essential for any aspiring artist. Learning these building blocks will ensure the success of an art creation and provide young artists with the confidence to experiment and allow self-expression to shine through. While exploring with drawing, acrylic painting, printmaking and collage, students will design and develop amazing art pieces, which include theatre and film posters, set and costume design concepts and many unique works of art. Students will use the fundamental elements of colour and design and develop their understanding of what makes art interesting to create and to look at.

Art from Around the World (SK-Gr. 2)

Get your passport stamped and get ready to take a creative journey. While creating 2-D and 3-D art pieces using mixed media like paint, specialty papers, fabric, papier mache, clay, natural and found objects and more, students will learn and explore the cultures and traditions of many different countries. Projects vary from term to term and may include masks, instruments, puppets, floor cloths and traditional paintings.

Collage & Acrylic Painting (Gr. 8-12)

In this fun and contemporary approach to acrylic painting, young artists will experiment with traditional painting techniques, while being introduced to new ways of looking at and approaching subject matter. Students will be encouraged to explore, use experimentation and be spontaneous in the development of their own painting ideas by incorporating collage and image transfer techniques. Projects include the use of simple cut and paste method, photocopy transfer printing, and exploration of various acrylic painting applications including blending, glazing, sgraffito, scumbling and much more in combination with found material. This class is appropriate for beginners or more advanced students.

Jewelry Creation & Design (Gr. 4-8)

This class is perfect for students who want to work artistically with a variety of interesting materials, are creative with their accessories and have always wanted to design their own jewelry. Each term, this program will provide the opportunity to bring many techniques and materials together in a unique way and bring original designs alive, from concept drawings to artistic pieces. Students will learn to work with wire, beads, metal, found and natural objects and one of a kind finds, as they begin to understand the process of jewelry design and creation.

This engaging and dynamic program is perfect for the child who wants to learn many art techniques, while creating diverse and imaginative projects. Each term students will create different, unique and individualized art pieces through a variety of themes and subject matter. Using a variety of art materials, young artists will combine their creative imaginations with their curiousity about the world around them to create multi-layered art pieces. Each term students will become scientists/artists to explore and create art projects inspired by the scientific world. Themes and projects vary term by term but may include human and animal bodies, archaeology, geology and the earth, environments and ecosystems, light and energy and outer space.

Sculpture in Motion (Gr. 3-6)

Can art be combined with motion? Can we make sculptures fly? In this class, students will explore 3-D assemblage and construction, using basic, mechanical principles, lots of imagination and inventiveness. This is a sculptural creation program with an emphasis on moveable parts. Small- and large-scale mobiles, self-standing, moveable structures, life size corrugated cardboard sculptures, Japanese kites and shadow puppets will be explored in unique and imaginative ways.
