Classes / Summer / Adult Art Classes


Adult students (15+) experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs, are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace. Each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches.

Classes are a week-long and are offered 9:15am-12:15pm or 1:15-4:15pm. Except where indicated, materials are not included and a required material list will be provided alongside the course description.

HST is added to all fees. See our Registration Policies.

Every effort will be made to run programs at our facility, however some programs may be held off-site at the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, which is located at 175 St. Clair Avenue West (the south west side of Avenue Rd. and St. Clair). You will receive notification of this location change one week prior to the start of your program.

Please note that room schedules are not finalized until one week prior to the start of a program. We can not guarantee your classroom prior to this time.

Portraits in Pastel

with Sadko Hadzihasanovic

Pastels are one of the most immediate and satisfying mediums to work in. A crayon-like medium that combines the best qualities of drawing and painting, they can produce intense, vivid colours or soft and subtle shades. Pastels were used by many famous artists including Renoir and Degas and are a great introduction to colour, for people who are contemplating a painting course. Working from a model students will develop their understanding of color theory, harmony and composition while learning to draw expressive portraits.

Classical Drawing

The drawing methods of classical artists served as the foundation of any representational art. In this course students will learn the methods and materials used in classical drawing, while they learn to create realistic drawings. Materials used will include charcoal, graphite and coloured chalks. Participants will learn how to block-in an image and simplify values into light and shadow. Demonstrations will be provided and the use of different drawing surfaces will be discussed. Some previous drawing experience is recommended.

Painting for Beginners

This is an introductory course in painting, suitable for the novice painter or as a refresher for those who have not painted for some time. The class will focus on the fundamentals of composition, colour theory, shape, paint handling and application, while developing one's own creative and perceptual skills. Perspective Drawing

An artist's ability to achieve a convincing sense of depth in representational drawing and painting of any format is rooted in their knowledge of perspective. Through both structured linear perspective and free hand exercises, this course will examine the principals of one-point, two-point and three-point perspective and how basic shapes behave in our field of vision. In reference to objects, interior and exterior spaces, landscape, figure and portraiture, students will solidify their foundation knowledge while developing their ability to solve perspective problems and better understand how to represent convincing volume and depth in their own work.

Painting Water

If you feel like you're in over your head when painting water, then spend a relaxing week learning some tricks and developing comfort in painting water landscapes. Improve your painting skills while doing water sketches, choosing a custom colour palette for your scene and creating a landscape painting with water as the primary focus. You will need to bring suitable reference material of your subject and you'll get helpful instruction how to make your painting come to life and make a big 'splash'!

Classical Painting

Ever wondered how old masters created such luminous paintings? This class will teach traditional oil painting techniques that were used by the old masters in order to create a still life painting. We cover the purpose and mechanics of underpainting and learn how to create a still life using layering techniques. You will also gain valuable knowledge on preparing a canvas, properly using mediums, mixing colours and glazing. Intermediate drawing skills are recommended.

Contemporary Acrylic Painting

This class is designed for students who have previous painting experience and want to develop a body of work. Varied subject matter will be used and students wishing to work on independent projects will also be accommodated. Much individual attention will be provided and students will learn problem-solving techniques for painting issues that arise through the study of composition, perspective, fore/mid/background, colour mixing, contrast, and sense of depth.

Landscape Painting

Designed for those who have some experience with painting, this program will take students to the next step as they explore an exciting range of techniques and approaches to landscape painting. Working from images or personal photographs, students will work on the fundamentals including composition, perspective, colour mixing, and paint application. Plenty of individual attention and critique will be provided and students will enjoy demonstrations at the beginning of each class.

Intro to Watercolour Painting

Designed for students new to watercolour painting, and also for those who wish to further develop their level of skill and knowledge with this medium, this class will introduce colour mixing, the use of watercolour brushes and how to paint with the transparency of watercolours. Participants will also explore various techniques such as making washes, painting wet-into-wet and using resist processes. The fundamentals of composition and perspective will be addressed and students will work with a variety of subject matter including still life, landscape and subjects of their own choice. Drawing skills can vary.
