Classes / Summer / Adult Art Classes


Adult students (15+) experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs, are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace. Each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches.

Classes are a week-long and are offered 9:15am-12:15pm or 1:15-4:15pm. Except where indicated, materials are not included and a required material list will be provided alongside the course description.

HST is added to all fees. See our Registration Policies.

Every effort will be made to run programs at our facility, however some programs may be held off-site at the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, which is located at 175 St. Clair Avenue West (the south west side of Avenue Rd. and St. Clair). You will receive notification of this location change one week prior to the start of your program.

Please note that room schedules are not finalized until one week prior to the start of a program. We can not guarantee your classroom prior to this time.

July 3-6 (4-day week)

Painting for Beginners

with Martha Johnson

This is an introductory course in painting, suitable for the novice painter or as a refresher for those who have not painted for some time. The class will focus on the fundamentals of composition, colour theory, shape, paint handling and application, while developing one's own creative and perceptual skills. With plenty of guidance and individual attention, students will paint from still life and photo references. Students will paint in acrylics.

Impressionist Painting

with Paul Robert Turner

Concentrating on the relationship between light and colour, students will paint from a photograph in their choice of oil or acrylic paint. This program will explore achieving a convincing sense of volume and depth in various expressive styles and inform students on the 'colour priority' method of impressionist painting, addressing one's ability to control tertiary colours on their palette and avoiding a flat and chalky end result in their work. This course is best suited for students with some past experience in drawing and painting.

Drawing for the Terrified

Portrait Drawing

Designed for students who would like to explore portrait drawing in depth, this class will delve into the many subtle details of facial features and capturing a likeness. Through in class exercises, students will develop their abilities with proportion, shape, line, and value and will finish the week with a sustained pose. Also covered in detail will be various contemporary drawing approaches with charcoal in a long pose format. This course is suitable for students who are new to portraiture and those who have had some previous experience. Some previous general drawing experience is recommended.

Painting Skies & Water

Do you enjoy painting skies? How about water? Enjoy the challenge and pleasure to capture the many moods of skies and great variety of clouds. You will also learn to paint various water surfaces. Such as still water reflections and rushing waterfalls. Students may bring a personal reference which can be discussed with the instructor. More structure (and life jackets) available if required and demos will be provided. Come join the fun and get your feet wet! Students may choose to work in oils or acrylics.

Classical Painting Techniques

Ever wondered how old masters created such luminous paintings? This class will teach traditional oil painting techniques that were used by the old masters in order to create a still life painting. Students will cover the purpose and mechanics of underpainting and learn how to create a still life using layering techniques. You will also gain valuable knowledge on preparing a canvas, properly using mediums, mixing colours and glazing. Intermediate drawing skills are recommended. Students may choose to work in oils or acrylics.

Children's Book Illustration

Do you dream of illustrating a children's book? Would you love to create a magical world with characters that you've designed? Do you love the magic of children's books and feel that you have something to offer? Then this course is for you.
Find out how the professionals illustrate children's books from character development, through beginning thumbnail storyboards, to final illustrations. This course will show you how to take the drawing skills you have and apply them to children's book illustration. It will help you develop character, emotions, poses and environment. In addition to learning the process and creating your own illustrations, you will also learn about marketing your work and portfolio preparation. Previous drawing experience is an asset.

Drawing for Beginners

This workshop is designed for beginners and those wishing to improve their drawing skills, as well as refine their understanding of visual language. Using charcoal pencils, charcoal sticks, and conté, students will learn the fundamentals of observational drawing. Composition, proportion, shape, and line will all be explored through in-class exercises and projects. This condensed program will help students become confident with the basic tools of visual expression. Drawing exercises with a nude model will be part of this workshop.

Drawing & Painting for Beginners

Students will start with the drawing and sketching process and develop skills needed to create a completed painting. Drawing techniques such as proportion, shape, perspective, line weights, shading, value and highlighting will be explored, as well as painting techniques like composition, colour theory and colour mixing. Students may choose to work in oil or acrylic and also choose to work from their own personal photos or from other photographic sources. This class is perfect for beginners. Those with some previous painting experience are also welcome.

Tools of the Trade

with Roberto Rosenman

In this workshop, we will focus on the technical side of creating a painting. Primarily, we will use colour theory to learn how to mix any colour on your palette. Students will learn how to identify hue, value and chroma when painting and avoid some of the pitfalls of painting, like creating 'mud' on your palette. In addition, we will examine the different pigments, understanding where they fall on the colour wheel and how and when to properly use them. Students will also learn proper brush handling and techniques. Lastly, we will look closely at the materials of painting-understanding the different types and uses of brushes, mediums, varnishes and painting surfaces. Suited for both oil and acrylics, students will gain useful knowledge that can be applied to both representational and abstract forms of painting.

Perspective Drawing

An artist's ability to achieve a convincing sense of depth in representational drawing and painting of any format is rooted in their knowledge of perspective. Through both structured linear perspective and free hand exercises, this course will examine the principals of one-point, two-point and three-point perspective and how basic shapes behave in our field of vision. In reference to objects, interior and exterior spaces, landscape, figure and portraiture, students will solidify their foundation knowledge while developing their ability to solve perspective problems and better understand how to represent convincing volume and depth in their own work.

Urban Landscape Painting

This course is designed for students who are interested in developing drawing and painting skills using the urban environment as a reference. Working from photos, students will be introduced to various concepts with an emphasis on utilizing the various compositional opportunities found in the city environment. Basic perspective, value, practical colour theory and various painting techniques will be discussed within the framework of a very flexible contemporary painting process. Students can paint in either oils or acrylics. All levels of skill are welcome but students must have some previous painting experience.

Digital Photography (Intensive)

with Jennifer Chin

In this intensive workshop, students will learn to confidently use their digital cameras to capture artistic and compelling photographic images. Students will be introduced to basic photographic techniques such as framing and composition while learning to use their camera's semi-automatic and manual controls. In-class slide lectures and simple assignments will be accompanied by practical demonstrations and field trips in which students will learn to practically employ the techniques and concepts covered in class. All levels of experience in this class are welcome.
Please note: Students are required to provide their own digital camera capable of full manual control. No previous experience is needed although basic computer skills and regular access to a computer for image transfer is necessary.

Classical Drawing

In this course students will learn the methods and materials used in classical drawing, while they learn to create realistic drawings. Digital Photography & Photo Transfer

In this workshop, students will be introduced to a variety of photo transfer techniques. Using digital photographs taken in the class, participants will learn to capture and select images for transfer, and will learn to transfer those images to a variety of materials including wood, canvas, and glass to create new photo-based artworks or to simply add a unique personal touch to their home decor.
Please note: Students are required to provide their own digital camera for the course. No previous experience is needed although basic computer skills for image transfer is necessary.

This intensive workshop, geared to current art students, new and prospective teachers, early childhood educators and certified teachers, will allow participants to learn how to incorporate innovative art projects and drama ideas and exercises into future classroom experiences. Incorporating the arts into lessons can increase student success and teach valuable skills that cross over to other subject area. Exercises, projects, information and suggestions focusing on creative self-expression and comfort with the arts, are the basis for innovative lesson planning and will be featured in this course curriculum. Some of the topics covered will include: Creative and Integrated Thinking, Creating the Magic, Arts Appreciation & Arts Assessment, Group Dynamics in Drama and Art-Making, Elements of Design, Drawing & Painting, Printmaking, Mixed Media & Layering, Drama & Improvisation, Story-Based Drama, Character and Movement and Integrating Drama & Visual Art.
