Classes / Summer / Adult Art Classes


Adult students (15+) experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs, are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace. Each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches.

Classes are a week-long and are offered 9:15am-12:15pm or 1:15-4:15pm. Except where indicated, materials are not included and a required material list will be provided alongside the course description.

July 4-7

Classical Drawing

with Roberto Rosenman

The drawing methods of classical artists served as the foundation of any representational art. In this course students will learn the methods and materials used in classical drawing, while they learn to create realistic drawings. Materials used will include charcoal, graphite and coloured chalks. Participants will learn how to block-in an image and simplify values into light and shadow. Demonstrations will be provided and the use of different drawing surfaces will be discussed. Some previous drawing experience is recommended.

Drawing for Beginners

Using charcoal pencils, charcoal sticks, and conté, students will learn the fundamentals of observational drawing. Composition, proportion, shape, and line will all be explored through in-class exercises and projects. This condensed program will help students become confident with the basic tools of visual expression.

Digital Photography for Beginners

In this beginner program, students will learn to confidently use their digital cameras to capture artistic and compelling photographic images. Students will be introduced to basic photographic techniques such as framing and composition while learning to use their camera's semi-automatic and manual controls. In-class slide lectures and simple assignments will be accompanied by practical demonstrations and field trips in which students will learn to practically employ the techniques and concepts covered in class. All levels of experience in this class are welcome.

Please note: Students are required to provide their own digital camera capable of full manual control (DSLRs are preferred). No previous experience is needed although a basic understanding of your digital camera and regular access to a computer for image transfer is necessary.

Through both structured linear perspective and free hand exercises, this course will examine the principals of one-point, two-point and three-point perspective and how basic shapes behave in our field of vision. In reference to objects, interior and exterior spaces, landscape, figure and portraiture, students will solidify their foundation knowledge while developing their ability to solve perspective problems and better understand how to represent convincing volume and depth in their own work.

Abstract Painting

This is an inspiring, process-oriented course for those who are willing to delve into the creative journey towards abstract painting. Designed for the beginner painter with some painting experience, students will be encouraged to explore spontaneity and experimentation and to develop conceptual ideas. Helpful visual information on modern art will be provided with an emphasis on composition, balance, colour, form and symbolism, the representation of motion and the superimposition of images in the organization of space. Classical Painting

Contemporary Acrylic Painting

Impressionist Painting

Concentrating on the relationship between light and colour, students will paint from a photograph, in their choice of oil or acrylic paint.
