Adult students experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace and each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches. Working with professional instructors who are practicing artists, helps to inspire students and ensure the latest studio approaches are being taught.

Encaustic Mixed Media Painting Workshop

This workshop is a great introduction to a fun and unique painting approach. Using melted bees wax and mixed media, this hands-on workshop will allow participants to explore safe, natural and non-toxic mediums; melting and fusing; applying photo transfers and collage and texture, while creating dynamic paintings.

Gather & Sing!

with Patrick Rose

Singing in a group can be inspirational, therapeutic and a ton of fun. Here’s your chance to gather with others to sing the songs you miss from the folk boom. Led by performer/guitarist Patrick Rose, the group will sing the great songs of Simon and Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, The Travellers, The Weavers, Pete Seeger, The Limeliters, The Kingston Trio, Bob Dylan, Carole King and Burt Bacharach - not to mention a few of the great standards from Elvis, Manhattan Transfer, the Beatles and just about any other great group you want to name. Singing talent not necessary.

Fun Painting Techniques with Oil

In this five-week mini-class, students will learn how to manipulate oil paint to create different surfaces and textures within a painting. Working from a photo reference, students will create dynamic compositions, while learning many tricks of the trade, including painting with a palette knife and different size brushes, creating volume, textures, working with perspective within a landscape, simplifying your reference material and colour balance within a painting.

Drawing from the Model

This is a 3-part drawing course in which students will explore the human form in various drawing mediums. The first component will deal with basic composition, proportion and values of the figure through the use of pencil and chalk. On the second day students will be introduced to the handling of soft pastels. The third class will round off the lesson by exploring the use of watercolour in the rendering of the nude figure. This course is open to all skill levels.

Introduction to Storybook Illustration

This mini-class will introduce students to the concepts needed to create storyboards and layouts for picture books. Students will learn and develop their skills in drawing and illustration using pencil, pen, ink and paint. The work of well-known illustrators will be shared with the group as they start to uncover their own, unique illustration styles and develop their personal characters and picture-book stories.

Introduction to Mosaic Art

In this workshop, students will create very special and unique, indoor mosaic pieces. Individualized projects are encouraged and plenty of guidance will be provided. The class will learn about mosaic design while completing one of a kind art pieces. Traditional mosaic tools and materials will be used but students should bring their own base to mosaic on (an item made of wood, ceramic or glass is recommended). Participants are also encouraged to bring items to include in the mosaic piece that may have special meaning to them.

Photo Transfer Workshop

Learning how to transfer your personal photos or interesting images to new mediums can be an exciting way to exercise your creativity, while creating unique and personalized art pieces. Students will explore photo transfer techniques and learn how to work with various surfaces including fabric, glass, clay and wood. What to bring: Please bring 1 to 3 images or photos.

Clay Figurative Workshop

In this workshop, students will learn about the development and construction of a hanging figurative piece or character sculpture. Decorative techniques using screen-printed imagery, transferred using underglazes, will be explored and utilized to create truly unique and creative art pieces. This is a great program for beginners and experienced alike.

Portraits in Pastel

Pastels are one of the most immediate and satisfying mediums to work in. They can produce intense, vivid colours or soft and subtle shades and were also used by many famous artists including Renoir and Degas. A great introduction to colour, for people who are contemplating a painting course, this program is guaranteed to take your drawing abilities to the next level. Pastel is a crayon-like medium that combines the best qualities of drawing and painting. It is an expressive medium, which will allow for a more satisfying drawing experience. Working from a model students will develop their understanding of colour theory, harmony and composition while learning to draw expressive portraits.

Painting from the Heart

In this unique workshop, students will explore a whole new way of painting from a space of freedom, non-judgment and experimentation. This process is about loosening up, letting go of expectations, having fun and allowing your art to unfold naturally. The emphasis is on finding your true voice and allowing your personal expression to bloom and grow with flow and ease. There are no mistakes here! The goal is to gather with the intention to let go more fully, connect more authentically with ourselves and others, step more bravely into the unknown and invite joy back into the creative process…and into our lives! Demonstrations of painting techniques such as layering, dripping, stamping, expressive mark making, etching, patterning, drawing with paint and carving out imagery will be shown. Working on large canvases, we spiral between painting with wild abandon, boldly trusting in the unknown, and making more conscious choices about composition, personal imagery and colour palette. This is a process-based workshop that will empower you with a toolbox of new techniques as well as a new perspective to approach your creative journey (and your life)!

Introduction to Digital Photography

In this beginner, intensive workshop, students will learn to confidently use their digital cameras to capture artistic and compelling photographic images. Students will be introduced to basic photographic techniques such as framing and composition while learning to use their camera’s semi-automatic and manual controls. Please note: Students are required to provide their own digital camera capable of full manual control (DSLRs are preferred).

123 Winter Painting Panel

You can create a winter-inspired painting in just 1-2-3! Participants will work with acrylic paint to create a unique and contemporary painted wooden panel. Focus will be placed on learning to innovatively work with a limited colour palette, composition, perspective and paint handling. With plenty of guidance and individual attention, students will paint their winter-inspired scenes from photo references and their own imaginations.
