Why has the Avenue Road Arts School appointed a Curator? Why is the experience of letting our work see the light of others' eyes such a meaningful one? Is it public adulation that we seek or is it something else... something more basic?

Having the opportunity to 'show' one's work adds a dimension to the experience of making art that is significant for many students. While we all find fulfillment in creating, some of us feel a yearning to put the work 'out there' so others can see it.

Art is a highly personal expression of one's being – often when we create we discover something of who we are. I believe that it is natural to want to say in some public forum, (even if it's to a few other people). This is who I am!

To show who we are – at least one aspect of who we are – is almost like having people know our name, our identity. We don't expect the people we meet to comment on the beauty of our name – only to recognize it. In the same way, when we show our work we do not need praise for what we have done, (although this is always a bonus) but we do need to be acknowledged.

Many of us take a long time to discover our own voice. We are not helped by the barrage of advertising that tells us who we should be and what we should want.

When we can express ourselves through creative work that others can see, we feel acknowledged for who we really are. This is surely a beginning to finding our true voice.

First Art Opening......

Our first art opening took place in May to the delight of children, parents, friends and relatives. The works of Linda Prussick's students were beautifully displayed and mounted. Guests enjoyed the reception as well as the exciting works of art.

Painting student Suzanne Dennis makes her first sale at our annual show of adult art which took place at the Women's Art Association last June

Outreach to Seniors' Homes Expands

As of September, teachers from the Avenue Road Arts School will be offering classes at Forest Hill Place on Castlefield Avenue as well as the Bradgate Arms, both residences for senior citizens.

Our relationship with the Bradgate Arms was initiated last year with the introduction of some painting classes as well as a music class for seniors and babies. Forest Hill Place has invited us to offer classes in painting, Singing Broadway Showtunes, and drama for seniors. We look forward to a long and productive partnership with both of these forward looking institutions.
