Over the next few months, we have a wonderful opportunity to build for the future of Arts for Children of Toronto. We have from now until September 30, 2000 to raise money for the Arts for Children of Toronto Arts Endowment Fund. Under the Ontario Government's Arts Endowment Fund Program, money that we raise for endowment purposes will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $75,000 and the Arts for Children of Toronto Arts Endowment Fund will be established at the Ontario Arts Council Foundation. By making a contribution for endowment purposes now, your gift will automatically be doubled, and you will be helping to build a lasting source of scholarship funds for Arts for Children of Toronto.

If you had told neurologist Laura Schiffer that in less than a year of taking classes at the Avenue Road Arts School she would be exhibiting her art at the Women's Art Association Gallery, she would have said that her art was just a hobby. But that's just what is happening to Laura and several of her co-students.

Dr. Laura Schiffer works on her landscape paintingWhile taking classes as a relaxing form of recreation and a casual divertissement, many find themselves - to their own surprise and delight - seriously bitten by the drawing or painting bug. Some have even left their law practices to pursue art full-time. "When I started classes at the art school, I couldn't even draw a box," explains Deborah Brent who practiced law for ten years. "What instructors Sybil Goldstein and John Viljoen gave me was invaluable. Not only did they pass along the tools I needed, but they encouraged me to feel I could really do it." Deborah now spends 30 hours a week studying classical figure drawing and eventually plans to pursue this as a profession. Several of John Viljoen's protegés are on their way to becoming professional artists. Valerie Meek has been given advanced placement at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art for the coming year. Two others are now enrolled in MFA Programs: Margaret Rose at the New York Academy of Art, and Bonnie Halko at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. John has also been attracting to his classes, architects and professional artists, including Jon Stuart, one of the animators of Nelvana's hit cartoon series, Bob and Margaret.

John speaks for most inspiring teachers: "It is my goal to help each student to bring out the best in themselves - I point the way, open the doors and occasionally hold their hands." The annual Adult Art Show is our way of acknowledging both faculty and students alike.
