SURPRISING OURSELVES

Winter Updates

When I read what one of the kids from an inner city art project wrote, I found the tears streaming down my cheeks. "I like the arts centre because it's fun and it will keep us from getting bored and doing bad stuff like throwing ketchup at old ladies" (JC aged 12). What could be more moving than the thought of a young person discovering something wonderful about themselves and recognizing that they'd rather be developing their talent than getting into trouble on the streets?

A week later I was also moved - this time in a room full of business executives who were participating in our Beyond the Box TM program. "I had no sense of myself as a creative person until today," said one VP for legal services. "This has given me a whole new way of looking at myself and the people I interact with. I feel better about myself when I see that I can do things I never dreamt of doing!"

No matter how young or old we are, how rich or poor, we can still surprise ourselves. It happens when we put ourselves in new situations, step outside our comfort zone and discover resources and talents we never knew we had.
