Gallery Event Draws Many Guests   The "Art Bug" Runs
in the Family
This year's Gallery Event, featuring drawings, paintings, photographs and ceramic pieces created by many of the school's adult students, was well attended and well appreciated. Curated by Sally Frater, the exhibit was held at the school on March 2nd and 3rd. Visitors were struck by the high level of competence and originality exhibited by the students. Many commented on the ever-improving quality of the work that the Avenue Road Arts School students are producing. Stay posted for next year's exhibition dates!

Shawna Granovsky, paediatrician and mother of three, gave birth to her last child just hours after her Thursday class with instructor Linda Kooluris Dobbs. Determined not to miss a class, she returned the following Thursday! Her two older children attend classes upstairs in the preschool while she works in the basement learning to paint from photographs.

Eugene Kash, well-known violinist and teacher and his grandson, Adam Whaley, are both studying Drawing and Painting with Sadko Hadzihasanovic. On occasion, they are asked to paint the same still life and 89 year old Kash delights in comparing notes with his 8-year old grandson, who thinks it's "cool" that they both take art classes from the same teacher.

Both are proud of each other's work, as is Susie Whaley – Adam's mom and Eugene's daughter. Susie teaches in the Kinder Arts program at the Avenue Road Arts School, as well as leading the Art and Sign Studio which integrates deaf and hearing children.

As a violinist, Kash has always been interested in technique and style, as well as texture, composition and movement. He is intrigued to discover how these elements translate into a different art form. He appreciates the encouragement, advice and guidance he gets from Sadko, with whom he has been studying for two years.

Likewise, Watercolour student Peggy Murphy gathers inspiration from her instructor, Moira Clark. Coincidentally, Peggy's grandaughter, Kate Jackson, studied drawing and painting with Moira at the AGO fifteen years ago. At that time, Kate created a portrait of Moira which still hangs at her parents' cottage.
