Entertainment will be provided by the Canada Pops Orchestra's David Warrack who will be joined by some members of the school's singing and theatre classes. A dedicated volunteer committee is hard at work preparing a fabulous art sale and silent auction. Original items such as a glass piece from the Sandra Ainsley Gallery and a personalized song composed by David Warrack will make the auction an unusual one. Raffle and door prizes will add to the afternoon's festivities. Proceeds from the event will go to Arts for Children of Toronto, which provides scholarship and outreach programs to children in underserved communities. We are grateful to Crayola Canada, Lawrence Decter Investment Counsel, Roots Canada, BMO Nesbitt Burns and TD Bank Financial Group for generously sponsoring this event. Donors and sponsors will be acknowledged in our event program, on event signage, on the school Web site, and in the next issue of Splash which will reach 7,000 families. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or donating a silent auction item, please contact Lisa Phillips at lisa@artsforchildren.org or by calling her at (416) 961-1502 ext. 302. Space is limited and there will be no ticket sales at the door, so buy your tickets soon. The cost is $40 for adults and $10 for children.

Milestones of the Last Ten Years This month the Avenue Road Arts School completed ten years of operation. Here is a list of some of the things that we have accomplished over the years: 1993 The school moves from a basement studio to its current home on Avenue Road and in its first year has 200 students. 1994 The school mounts the first of many large scale exhibits, celebrating the art of children, entitled Journey to Paradise. 1995 The school's charitable arm, Arts for Children of Toronto, is established. Through AFC, hundreds of children have attended the school on scholarship, and over 1000 children have benefited from high quality arts experiences through the Outreach Program. 1996 The Splash newsletter is launched it now reaches almost 10,000 readers. 1997 The school starts to mount major exhibitions of children's work in public venues such as Harbourfront, the CBC building, Metro Hall and BCE Place. 1998 Beyond the Box is launched a program that invites corporate executives to participate in hands-on arts activities to enhance their abilities to think creatively and to recognize hidden talents in themselves and their colleagues. 1999 www.avenueroadartsschool.com is launched. The Web site has attracted students from Turkey, Japan, the UK and the US. Students can now register online. 2000 The position of Curator is established to allow students of all ages to have their work "shown" at the school on a regular basis with invitations and opening receptions. 2001 Through the school's charitable arm, AFC, our first Outreach Program to inner-city schools is launched. 2002 The Ontario College of Teachers makes the Avenue Road Arts School an Official Provider of PLP Programs, allowing teachers to get credit for certain courses taken at the school. 2003 The school has grown from 200 students in its first year to over 1000 per term. Today The Jumbo Book of Art, created by teachers from the Avenue Road Arts School and written and illustrated by Irene Luxbacher, is released and selected as Gold Award Winner by US-based NAPPA. It is available in bookstores across North America and through our online store. |
