Arts School Offers Course for Teachers Gallery Event Coming Soon!
In the last few years, the provincial government has cut back funding for arts specialists in public schools, leaving hundreds of thousands of children deprived of the enjoyment and benefits that arise from quality arts programming. To help fill in this gap, Julie Frost, who has been on the Arts School's faculty for the last five years, has designed a program to give teachers the skills and confidence to introduce the arts to their students.

teachersThe course has been approved by the Ontario College of Teachers as one for which teachers can obtain credits. The Professional Learning Program, now open to private providers, is the subject of considerable controversy. The teachers' federation is against the govenment's mandatory recertification program, seeing it as an attack on teachers' professionalism. For this reason, some of the teachers enrolled in the course have opted not to accept PLP credits for their course. The others will be receiving two credits in Curriculum or Teaching Strategy.

Teachers attending the course cover a variety of topics including: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Drama, Integrating Drama and Visual Art and Assessment.

Teachers' responses to the course have been extremely enthusiastic. Joanne and Nicole, from Dennis Avenue School, say: "It has changed the way we look at assessing and teaching art in the classroom."

Integrated Arts for the Teaching Professional will be offered yearly, Fall, Spring and Summer.
