Faculty Profile: Klaas Hart

Klaas Hart's career is moving in several directions at once. "I've never been one to sit idle and my life now is no exception," states the busy artist. As a father of two, home life has its own demands but he still finds time to teach, exhibit, and even open his own gallery.

After graduating from OCAD, Klaas moved to the Netherlands to study with renowned Dutch painter Henk Helmantal. Klaas notes how difficult it is now to get a top rate education in fine arts and how many artists are turning to the old-fashioned apprenticeship model. This is what Klaas has in mind with his latest venture to showcase young talent: the Red Sable Gallery. Klaas explains, "I'd like to give something back to the art world and help artists get their work shown, and also give patrons a chance to acquire some really well considered art. Additionally, I will have select artists apprentice with me the way I learned from others."

Apart from this, Klaas has a solo exhibition entitled Kaleidoscope, opening April 22 at Loch Gallery. This is the culmination of more than a year's work, featuring the Still Life painting that he is known for.

Klaas brings his understanding of drawing and painting to his classes at the Arts School. "I really enjoy seeing the students take the information and run with it. It's not just about making a good painting; it's about embracing an idea that you can build on, that's what I try to teach." Klaas will host an exhibition of his students' work at Red Sable at the end of the spring term.

Students' Artwork at Toronto Art Expo

For the fourth year, the Avenue Road Arts School has participated in the Toronto Art Expo at the Metro Convention Centre. The large booth gives the school the opportunity to display the excellent work created by our students – both adults and children. There are always a number of passersby who wish to buy our students' work. And each year there are more and more offers. Perhaps it's time for an ARAS student Art Gallery! Any ideas?
