Painting as both a job and a hobby "makes for very confusing weekends," says Eric Louis, an instructor at the Avenue Road Arts School. However, painting for pleasure aside, he can also be found studying the Asian martial arts form Kobudo or scuba diving. As for work, the current direction it is taking him is towards "the development of interior and exterior scenes involving people and revolving around physical sensations and proximity (the distance between people)." After receiving his MFA from the New York Academy, Eric continued to study at the Art Students' League, one of the oldest art schools in North America and alma mater of American portrait painter Thomas Eakins. Under the instruction of Nelson Shanks (portrait painter to Pope John Paul II and Her Royal Highness, Diana, The Princess of Wales), Eric learned a colour system developed from the Cape Cod School of Art – a method that he offers in his Tuesday afternoon Approaches to Colour. In addition, Eric traveled to Norway to study under Odd Nerdrum (Norwegian figurative artist) whose unique technique attracts several chosen assistants each year for summer internships. With an exhibition upcoming in January at the Buckland Gallery in St. John, New Brunswick; with collectors such as the Honorable Frank McKenna (Canadian Ambassador to the USA) purchasing his work; and while teaching three classes every Tuesday in the Adult Arts program – whether it's for recreation or vocation, Eric Louis is one dedicated artist.
