ARAS Founding Director Honoured

On November 22, 2006, at a gala celebration at the Metro Convention Centre, Lola Rasminsky was honoured with the 2006 RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Trailblazer category.

Lola Rasminsky receives awardThese awards recognize outstanding woman entrepreneurs who have made important contributions to the Canadian economy. The six winners were selected from 150 semifinalists and almost 900 nominees from across Canada.

Rasminsky's story is compelling – in the past 27 years, she's gone from opening a small Fine Arts Kindergarten in the basement of her Forest Hill home for six neighbourhood children, to reaching more than 10,000 people each year through the three organizations which she has founded. The Avenue Road Arts School, a privately owned arts school serves more than 1,000 students of all ages under its roof each week. Arts for Children of Toronto , a registered charity, reaches 8,000 inner-city children per year. Beyond the Box, the corporate enterprise, has provided creativity and team-building training to more than 2,000 executives since its inception in 1998.

"I'm thrilled and honoured to receive this award," said Rasminsky. "My goal as an arts educator has always been to inspire students to recognize that they have the potential to create, to think with imagination, and to discover that there are more possibilities open to them than they had ever dreamt of."

Taking the School to the Students

ARAS logoThe Avenue Road Arts School is excited to be bringing programs into the community through its new Outreach Workshops! After 13 years of welcoming students into the School, it was time to bring the School to the students.

For schools, corporations, retirement communities and daycares, the Outreach Workshops provide educators, administrators and programming staff with ways to integrate professional arts instruction into existing programs. Outreach Coordinator Susie Whaley hopes that the programs "might just inspire one of the participants to pursue something creative that they might not have been exposed to otherwise."

Workshops are customized to meet the needs of each organization and can take on an integrated, visual or performing arts format. Professional Development Workshops are also available for educators, administrators or parent volunteers. Corporate Family Play Days are offered to businesses that wish to invite employees and their families to participate in a day of artistic discovery. All sessions are run by professional, practicing artists who have experience in child and adult education. From half day to full day to multiple day workshops, participants can create their own masterpieces or work together on beautification projects, commemorative installations or group showcases. The aim of these programs is to stimulate creativity, enhance communication, build trust and inspire personal development. For more information, or to book an Outreach Workshop, please call Susie Whaley, Outreach Coordinator at 416-961-1502 x314.
