KIDS' JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
TRAVELS TO METRO HALL

Since the beginning of time, people have chosen to exhibit art. The walls of temples, galleries and public buildings, have been chosen spaces to pay homage to art pieces created by famous artists and soon to be famous artists. But the art of children has never been taken seriously. Their art is displayed on refrigerators, bedroom or basement walls. We even, sometimes, throw our kids' work in the garbage.

For this reason, the Avenue Road Arts School was delighted to mount a children's art show entitled A journey Through Time, which ran from June 25 to June 28, 1998. "It was important to showcase the art of children in a way that was both meaningful to them and to adults", says Liana Del Mastro Vicente, curator of the show. Liana has been teaching at the school since its opening in 1993.

The exhibit marked the fifth year anniversary for the Avenue Road Arts School. The show, which transformed the entire school, took four months to prepare and highlighted the work of approximately 500 children, ages 3 to 14, from the school's Fine Arts Kindergarten and After School Arts Programs. The exhibit led viewers through different historical periods, as seen through the eyes of a child. Some rooms included: The Dinosaur Expedition, where a nine foot Dinosaur stood, Rock-A-Mania where people could walk through a cave and view prehistoric tools.

In Ancient Civilizations, Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were under one roof. Viewers entered Medieval Fairytales and were able to walk into a castle or sit on a throne fit for a king or queen. After discovering the Explorers & Inventors Discovery World, where a 4 year-old's version of Da Vinci's "Flying Machine" was highlighted, you could step into a time machine and end up visiting the Far Out Future. Other highlights included The Renaissance Portrait Gallery, Grandfather & Grandmother clocks and washrooms which depicted dif-ferent time periods.

A Journey Through Time was well received by the media, teachers, artists, parents and, most importantly, the children. Due to this enthusiasm, the exhibit was remounted at Metro Hall from Sunday, October 18 - Sunday, October 25, 1998. Delaney Capital and the EMC Group of Companies generously agreed to sponsor the remount of the show.

We are all excited that the exhibit will be viewed by a larger audience. Perhaps more people will be able to travel to the places only childer dream about and, once there, gain a real appreciation for children's art.

A Sensational Summer

The summer '98 term was the busiest and best ever! Through a wide variety of programs, all sorts of artistic adventures were offered for students at the school and, for the first time, in Muskoka.

The summer camp, James and the Giant Peach, was so popular it filled up in March! The 2 week programs provided full day fun for students aged 4 - 9. In each of our four sessions, kids explored this wonderful story through visual art, music and drama activities. There were smiles all around as they left at the end of each day with their giant papier mâché peaches, colourful costumes, pottery pieces or puppet theatres.

At the same time older kids, 10 - 14 years, were busy painting, potting, or creat-ing cartoon characters. The Kinetic Sculpture class even made radios that actu-ally worked! These specific half day, week long classes were a huge success and we hope to have more for this age group next year.

Summer fun and stimulation was not just for kids! The Teen and Adult pro-grams offered classes in Decorative Arts, Drawing and Painting, Pottery, Photography, and Writing. These week long sessions gave students the opportu-nity to really explore the medium of their choice, and their own creative process.

Port Carling was a new home to Avenue Road Arts School classes this summer. The lake and surrounding cottage country was the inspiration for marvelous mixed media projects. Over 100 kids, ages 4 - 9, attended and look forward to many more summers to come.

We hope all of you had as wonderful and adventurous a summer as we did.
