avenueroadartsschool.com website attracts international students

Maho Naborisaka, from Japan, found ARAS on the World Wide WebThis summer, the Avenue Road Arts School hosted international adult students from Greece, Japan, Turkey, the UK and the US. Many of them found the school through our website, which has attracted much favorable comment because of its clarity, liveliness, and interactive features.

The website allows you to see what programs we offer. It also lets you try your hand at painting and invites you to respond to our Question of the Month. This month's question is: "Why do you think doing art is considered by many to be therapeutic?"

If you study the website carefully, you could win an Avenue Road Arts School t-shirt by being the first to e-mail us the answer to a skill-testing question. The current question is: "How many drawing and painting classes are offered for adults by the Avenue Road Arts School?" E-mail us if you think you know the answer.

Back issues of Splash are also online. Just look on the home page and you'll know where to find them. Our website will become more and more interactive with time. We plan to add art lesson plans, so that parents and teachers will be able to make use of them. We welcome your suggestions on how to improve the website and what else you might like to see there. For example, would you like the option of registering for a course on-line? E-mail us your ideas and opinions.

Many thanks to our webmaster, Kathryn Presner, for doing such an outstanding job in creating an exciting and informative site.

In Memoriam

It is with deep regret that we note the passing of Max Korn. Max taught Stand-Up Comedy at the Avenue Road Arts School from 1993-97 and tragically died in a car accident in July. Max was a much loved teacher at the school. He had a tremendous love of life and brought humour into the lives of thousands of people through his teaching and as a stand-up comedian. Max will be sorely missed by all of us.

Adult summer students created beautiful pouring vessels

The business community is quickly recognizing the importance of creative thinking for maintaining a competitive edge. They also appreciate the value of creating a harmonious team where everyone is committed to the project and respects the talents of each other. Gone are the days when the only point of focus was the bottom-line. Attention has now shifted to the health and vitality of organizations and their members. The growing interest in 'inward bound' programs is a clear manifestation of this trend.

Executives are surprised and delighted to find that when they experience artmaking, they take away many lessons that are useful at the office. Playing a simple game resembling 'broken telephone', makes you realize how easily communication breakdowns can happen. This might lead you to look for ways to improve the dynamics at the office.

Were you asked to draw the simplest object - a pencil, for example; you would begin to notice more than you had before. The artist must see a great deal before s/he can begin to draw. Seeing more is of great value in any work environment.

If you were asked to draw something with your eyes closed, you wouldn't be afraid to make a mistake because there would be no expectation of someone judging you to be wrong. What does this tell us about conditions for taking risks? If you were asked to look at an unusual object and invent a use for it, your creative juices would begin to flow. You would delight and amuse yourself and your colleagues with your new contraption.

We need to nurture and develop our creative talents if we want to be creative people. We need to see our colleagues in a new light if we want to fully appreciate them and see new possibilities for the more productive role they could play in our organization. There are many opportunities for using the resources we have - in ways we've never thought of before. Generating this kind of thinking can only lead to more innovative and cohesive organizations.

Seeing colleagues do things in different ways stimulates new ideas and builds affection within an organization. By participating in one of the arts, we can learn about shaping a climate for creative thinking - and building a team that values, and likes, one another.
