In the early 80's she founded ChromaZone, a six-person artists' collective which primarily explored traditional art forms. These days Sybil revels in the solitude that making art' affords her: "It can be magic when you work for that moment when you leave yourself." Her work incorporates themes of the Canadian landscape, literal or psychological personae in mythology, and most recently, animals and children. Sybil's shows have been mounted extensively around Toronto and abroad. Her next exhibit, entitled "Oh Baby!" will be presented at The Library and Gallery in Cambridge, Ontario from July 9 to August 7. This summer, she will be the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Ashkenaz Festival at Harbourfront. Sybil
hopes to instill the instinctual perception of art in her students.
She wants them to "turn off the negative side of their brain and trust
their own instincts." As she rounds her twentieth anniversary in teaching,
she still finds it rewarding to watch her students gain confidence in
their own work and ability. Her goal is simple: "I hope to bring out
their own style - to develop their own hand." The large cadre of returning
students that Sybil attracts confirms that her instinctive and creative
guidance is working. Sybil teaches: Acrylic

The work is now a permanent installation in a hallway of the new Trimark offices, where it is appreciated with pride and delight by Trimark personnel.

How does a producer of newscasts for CBC International find time to take art classes on a regular basis during the day? Bruce Cushing makes time. Arranging his schedule has allowed him to take eight courses in the last three years, with Sybil Goldstein, in Life Drawing and Landscape Painting. "Sybil gives you the exploratory experience' allowing you to recognize that your own feelings of frustration are a normal part of the process - that failure' is not failure, it's just another experience," says Bruce. He appreciates that as a working artist, who is continuing to learn herself, she is always passing new techniques on to her students.
For Bruce, the presence of kids and their work in the school is a treat': "They are so open to possibilities, that it allows you to see a new range of possibilities. They see things I no longer see, or have forgotten how to see." Obviously, painting has become an important part of Bruce's life. Why? "It's a good way of refocussing and relieving stress. It makes you focus on process, not product. And it allows you to grow." Thank You for Your Support The Avenue Road Arts School would like to offer a special thanks to Joyce Langmuir, who donated a collection of art books for our adult art classes, and to Vivian Shyu, who donated bags of beautiful fabric for our children's art programs.
