Master Class In Portraiture

John Viljoen

July 7-11, 9:00 am-4:00 pm (with a lunch break from 12-1 pm)

Live and accurate portrait painting or drawing is the greatest challenge an artist can face. To paint a person clearly and simply, with beauty and strength, to paint the humanity inside the person through their outer body is the hardest and greatest goal. To render with the skills of past masters while still feeling fresh, to capture a portrait that feels like it is alive and full of intelligence and emotion, is to jump into the world of the great artists of times past. The only pre-requisites for this course are a serious work ethic and a sincere desire to learn.

Portrait Painting From Photos

Klaas Hart

July 14-18, 9:15 am-12:15 pm

In this week-long intensive class, students will improve their technical painting skills through the process of completing a single portrait. Topics covered will include; how to light and pose the model when creating photographic images which in turn can be used as a reference for portrait painting; and how an understanding of facial proportions will help create an accurate likeness of your subject. Participants will execute one finished portrait from a photographic source which will be provided in class, or if preferred, from one's own archives.
