Students will learn about and engage with the exciting world of textiles in art! In this course, we will consider art in relationship to traditional craft practices, and how they intersect, through studying artists like Anni Albers, Faith Ringgold, Ruth Asawa, Hannah Epstein and Colleen Heslin. Students will be introduced to hand sewing, embroidery, needle punch and weaving techniques.

Lauren Lavery is a visual artist, writer and editor. Her interdisciplinary practice consists mainly of sculpture, painting, installation, textiles and ceramics. She is interested in the discourse of taste, value and politics surrounding aesthetic objects and environments, mainly situated within the domestic sphere. Her visual art has been exhibited throughout Canada, in solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver, Toronto, Cambridge, and Winnipeg. She is the founder and editor of Peripheral Review, a Toronto-based online platform of exhibition reviews of Canadian emerging artists and spaces. She holds a BFA with honours from Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts in Vancouver, BC.
