
This course will explore the fundamentals of composition, including both traditional and contemporary approaches. Students will be encouraged to experiment and try new strategies, while refining their visual language and building skills in drawing & painting. Each class will include a slideshow and discussion, followed by hands on practice. We will look at both abstract and representational compositions, and analyse them in terms of rhythm, form, balance and focal points. This course is designed to encourage your creative voice and give you the tools to express it. It is most suitable for students with some experience who wish to broaden their horizons and sharpen their skills.

For Drawing:
- Vine or willow charcoal sticks
- Compressed charcoal
- Kneadable eraser
- Drawing paper (16” x 20” or larger)
- Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B & 6B
- Coloured media (chalk or pencil crayons)
- Scissors and coloured paper for collage
For Painting:
- Students can choose either oil or water-based paint – whichever they have more experience with
- Palette
- Palette knife (2 or 3 inches)
- Canvas boards or canvas paper pad (16 x 20 inches)
- Rags or paper towels
