For the complete beginner, you will be encouraged to let the artist inside you grow through exploration and refining your understanding of visual language. You will begin to develop your drawing and creative skills and become more confident with the tools of visual expression. Composition, proportion, shape, and line will all be explored through in-class exercises and projects.

Note: for the first class, students will need one pencil, willow charcoal, sketchbook, and kneaded erase
- Sketchbook (9"x12" or larger min. 90lb weight)
- one pad of newsprint OR cartridge paper 18”x24”
- one clear plastic sheet 9" x 12" (such as for protecting documents)
- pencils: 2B and 4B and 6B
- soft vine charcoal of medium or large thickness (also called “Willow charcoal”) (optional: 1 stick of compressed charcoal)
- kneadable eraser
- one sharpie and one non permanent felt tip marker
- a few markers, sharpies, pens, coloured pencils, or pastels *student’s choice
- a drawing board with 2 binder clips or tape, or other work surface
- a pencil sharpener, ruler, scissors, masking tape
