Adult students experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace. Each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches. Working with professional instructors who are practicing artists, helps to inspire students and ensure the latest studio approaches are being taught.
Small class sizes allow for plenty of one-on-one attention, guidance and critique. The School boasts a real sense of community and both the novice and advanced student find programs that will enhance individual styles of learning.
Students are given various opportunities to display their work both at the School and at outside venues like galleries and restaurants. Our online gallery, Facebook page and Flickr page allows adults to showcase their work to a wider audience.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for their class unless otherwise stated.

Abstract Painting

In this program, students will be exposed to conceptual ideas and explore various approaches to abstraction as they develop their own artistic voice through the work. Experimentation, risk-taking, spontaneity and expression will be encouraged. Helpful demos and visual information will be provided, with an emphasis on concept, composition, balance, colour, design, form and symbolism. Students may choose to paint in either acrylics or oil. This program is open to both the beginner and those with previous painting experience. Material list provided.

Acrylic Painting

In this class, students will focus on the fundamentals of colour theory, the study of light and shadow, composition, visual perspective, brush work and paint handling and application, as it pertains to acrylic medium. Demos and critiques will assist in developing one’s own creative and perceptual skills, as each term, varied subject matter will be explored. Students are encouraged to register for one term or all three terms. With plenty of individual attention, students will be encouraged to work at their own pace. This class includes positive and supportive critique during each session. Suitable for beginners or intermediate painters. Material list provided.

Classical Painting Techniques

with Roberto Rosenman

Ever wondered how old masters created such luminous paintings? This class will teach traditional oil painting techniques that were used by the old masters in order to create a still life or portrait painting. We cover the purpose and mechanics of underpainting and learn how to create a still life and portrait painting using layering techniques. You will also gain valuable knowledge on preparing a canvas, properly using mediums, mixing colours, glazing, scumbling and mixing realistic skin tones. In the portrait stage of this class, students will have the opportunity to create a realist portrait from a photo of their choice. Intermediate drawing skills are recommended. Colour in Painting

Colour is the life of a painting. In this course we will look into the relationship between colours, its psychological and physical characteristics, and practical mixing principles. We will explore historical background of colour theory, attributes of colour such as values, chroma, hue and colour harmony. Through practical exercises and demonstrations students will learn how to create colour schemes and to successfully employ them in abstract and representational artwork in any media. Contemporary Painting

Each term, in this program, a number of paintings will be completed and students will look at how to successfully compose, build and finish a painting. Varied subject matter including still life, figure, portrait, landscape and nature, along with the techniques needed to successfully paint these will be addressed. Those wishing to work on independent projects will also be accommodated. Much individual attention will be provided and students will learn problem-solving techniques for painting issues that arise through the study of composition, perspective, fore/mid/background, colour mixing, contrast and sense of depth. Drawing techniques such as proportion, shape, perspective, line weights, shading, value and highlighting will be explored, as well as painting techniques like composition, colour theory and colour mixing. Essentials in Landscape Painting

Designed for those interested in developing painting skills through landscape studies, students will work from a photo reference of their choosing as they explore the artistic and creative opportunities found in landscape painting. Instruction will address painting principles such as tone, colour, form, texture and composition. Demonstrations, plenty of individual attention and encouragement will increase the student’s creative confidence and style, while being introduced to painting essentials including composition, perspective, landmark representation, brush techniques, colour mixing, contrast and sense of depth. Impressionist Painting

with Anna Yuschuk

Concentrating on the relationship between light and colour, students will work from photographs to produce at least two paintings per term, in their choice of oil or acrylic paint. Students will explore achieving a convincing sense of volume and depth in various expressive styles. This course will also inform students on the “colour harmony and chords” of impressionist painting and will address one’s ability to mix colours in either physical or optical process. This course is best suited for students with some past experience in drawing and painting. Material list provided.

In this painting class, designed for painters looking to take their work to the next level, students will continue to build skill in colour mixing, brushwork, and composition. Traditional Portrait Painting Techniques

with Roberto Rosenman

Through an exploration of traditional oil painting techniques utilized by the old masters, students will delve into the genre of portraiture and develop strategies for translating the seemingly elusive colors we see in human flesh. Students will begin by learning the various methods to accurately draw the portrait while gaining an understanding of Cranial anatomy. Then using a combination of methods such as the Zorn palette, the Flemish technique, and the extended palette; students will develop a solid understanding of creating convincing flesh tones and capturing the character of the model. Proportion, value, colour mixing, brush handling, and materials will be discussed throughout each session. Intermediate drawing skills are recommended. Model fee included. Material list provided.
