Adult Summer Classes

Classes will run for a one-week duration.
HST will be added to all fees.

Every effort will be made to run programs at our facility, however some programs may be held off-site at the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, which is located at 175 St. Clair Avenue West (the south west side of Avenue Rd. and St. Clair). You will receive notification of this location change one week prior to the start of your program.

Adult students (15+) experience a warm, congenial and supportive environment to learn and create in. The large roster of programs, are designed to allow each individual to advance at his or her own pace. Each class offers a nice balance between challenging, fun, creative, and skill-based approaches.

Classes are a week-long and are offered 9:15am-12:15pm or 1:15-4:15pm. Except where indicated, materials are not included and a required material list will be provided alongside the course description.

Please note that room schedules are not finalized until one week prior to the start of a program. We cannot guarantee your classroom prior to this time.

WEEK 5: July 29-August 2

Photography Basics Intensive

with Jennifer Chin

In this short but intensive course, students will learn the fundamentals of photography including aperture, shutter speed, exposure control, while also covering composition and basic image editing. This is a great course for beginners or those with some experience who would like a refresher.
Please Note: All students are required to provide their own cameras with manual capabilities. DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, advanced point and shoots are all welcome!

Drawing & Painting for Beginners

with Pete Smith

Students will start with the drawing and sketching process and develop skills needed to create a completed painting. Drawing techniques such as proportion, shape, perspective, line weights, shading, value and highlighting will be explored, as well as painting techniques like composition, colour theory and colour mixing. Students may choose to work in oil or acrylic and also choose to work from their own personal photos or from other photographic sources. This class is perfect for beginners. Those with some previous painting experience are also welcome.

Mixed Media & Photography

with Jennifer Chin

In this short but intensive course, students will learn to transfer and incorporate their photographs onto a variety of surfaces to create their own mixed media artworks. Demonstrations on a variety of transfer techniques will be covered, as well as how to photograph and/edit objects and images for photo transfer. Techniques covered will include acrylic image transfer onto canvas, acrylic, glass, and wood. No previous experience is necessary.

Landscape Painting

with Pete Smith

Designed for those who have some experience with painting, this program will take students to the next step as they explore an exciting range of techniques and approaches to landscape painting. Working from images or personal photographs, students will work on the fundamentals including composition, perspective, colour mixing, and paint application. Plenty of individual attention and critique will be provided and students will enjoy demonstrations at the beginning of each class.
